The city of Fribourg is located on both sides of the river Saane. It is a city founded in the Middle Ages. It still shows a large number of the neat houses built in the 12th to 15th centuries. The green Funi, a funicular railroad, is the last still functioning water ballast railroad in Switzerland. You can reach it in a few steps from the train station. The funicular, which runs year-round, takes you down to the districts along the Saane River. It is operated with the waste water of the upper town.
