Sion, or Sitten in German, is located in the Valais at the mouth of the Sionne River on the Rhone. It is the city in Switzerland with the most hours of sunshine. The long history of settlement begins as early as the Stone Age and comes alive on a tour of the museums. The pretty old town also features buildings and numerous monuments from different eras. The towers of the Tourbillon and Valeria castles can already be seen from a distance. They are considered the landmarks of the city. Sion is surrounded by vineyards, which are characterized by the "Suonen" (irrigation canals). The bus station is the largest in Switzerland and takes visitors very quickly to the charming side valleys of the Valais.
