The Appenzell show dairy is an exciting excursion destination for cheese lovers and offers a comprehensive experience of traditional cheese production in the Appenzell region. It provides information about the art of cheese-making, the way of life of the people of Appenzell and the beauty of the Appenzellerland.
There is a nice playground for children with swings, a trampoline, a see-saw, a turntable and a large cheese house with a climbing wall. There is also a slide here. The house mouse "Chäsli Jakob" accompanies the children through the exhibition "Appenzeller - on the trail of the best-kept secret". It tells of its adventures in Appenzellerland.
You will see the entire process of traditional cheese production. But you won't be able to uncover the secret of Switzerland's spiciest cheese. However, you will smell the spicy herbs everywhere. And you can put together your own herbal blend to take home with you.
There are German labels in the exhibition. If required, you can download a guide onto your cell phone using an app, which translates these labels into eight languages. Good Wi-Fi ensures that this works well everywhere in the cheese dairy. An animated film in production alternates between German and English.
You get an insight into the production process and the cheese vat in which the cheese is mixed. The tour also includes a look into the cheese cellar, where up to 12,500 wheels of cheese are stored.
In the Appenzeller show dairy, you can take a look at the Appenzellerland right at the start of the tour. A pair of binoculars gives you a 360° view. Visitors are introduced to the way of life, customs and traditions of the people. You will learn many interesting facts and hear typical sounds of nature from the region.
In addition to cheese, the "Höckli" restaurant also offers other typical Appenzellerland dishes. Furnished with cozy wood, you will feel at home here. The restaurant offers hot meals throughout the day. Every Sunday morning you will find a rich breakfast buffet here. In the Käsekessi in the "Kessi" restaurant, groups can even prepare traditional Chäshörnli themselves under supervision. Another restaurant is called "Marktplatz". It has the largest room.
In the specialty store, you will find more than 80 types of cheese in the open counter. But you can also buy other traditional Appenzellerland products here.
You will find the show dairy in Stein AR. The village is located in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden.
The easiest way to get there is via St. Gallen, followed by a Postbus ride to Stein. The Postbus takes about 15 minutes from St. Gallen to the village.
You can also drive via St. Gallen. However, you can also drive directly from the highway via Gossau via Herisau to Stein.
