Lauterbrunnen is located in an extremely diverse region that has a lot to offer all year round. There are numerous excursions that you can take from here.

Schilthorn

In less than an hour you can reach the summit of the Schilthorn from Lauterbrunnen. Here, in the revolving restaurant Piz Gloria at an altitude of almost 3000 meters, you can let the impressive mountain ranges pass you by.

Or you can follow in the footsteps of James Bond. The film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" was shot here in 1967, even before the restaurant was officially inaugurated. One stop further down, at the Birg rock massif, the Thrill Walk is something for those with a head for heights. The path leads directly into the steep vertical rock face of the imposing rock massif. With glass floor, crawl tunnel and steel nets the thrill is increased.

Many great offers are waiting for you on the Schilthorn:

  • Summit restaurant Piz Gloria
  • panorama terrace Swiss Skyline
  • Bond World on the Schilthorn
  • Bond Cinema Schilthorn
  • Walk of Fame
  • Thrill Walk on the Birg
  • Skyline Walk on the Birg

Waterfalls

The Lauterbrunnen Valley is not nicknamed the "Valley of 72 Waterfalls" without reason. Besides big names like the Trümmelbach Falls or the Staubbach Falls, there are numerous other candidates here that you can visit.

On six UNESCO theme trails, which lead past the waterfalls, you will learn about these forces of nature. Here you will learn exciting things like the names of the glaciers, the waterfalls, the mountain lakes or the torrents. The flowers and animals that can be seen along the way are also explained in detail. The trails are well signposted, so you can't miss them while exploring the waterfalls.

Popular activities in summer are:

  • Hiking

Hiking

Your possibilities for hiking from Lauterbrunnen are almost endless. The entire Jungfrau region is at your feet and hiking trails stretch in all directions. You decide whether you want to stay in the valley or visit one of the surrounding mountain peaks.

You can take a short and easy hike to the Grauseeli from the middle station Birg of the Schilthorn cable car. The Grauseeli is especially popular with amateur photographers. Here, on sunny days, the mountains are beautifully reflected in the lake.

The hike through the beautiful Lauterbrunnen valley from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg can be done in summer as well as in winter. It is especially beautiful at the time of snowmelt, when the mountain streams carry so much water that their waterfalls fall into the valley with loud thunder.

On this two-hour hike alone, you'll encounter three spectacular waterfalls:

  • Mürren Falls
  • Trümmelbach Falls
  • Staubbach Falls

Via ferrata

The via ferrata Mürren-Gimmelwald with the 80 m long Nepal Bridge is very popular. It has some vertiginous spots that are secured with wire hangers and ropes. You are separated from the ground by at least 600 m during the climb. On this via ferrata you can also find the "High Ultimate", one of the ten or so basejump jumps on the Mürrenfluh.

Summer tobogganing

From the top station of Männlichen, you can take the Summer Gemel, a type of summer toboggan, down the mountain. The track starts at 2225 m.a.s.l. and is six kilometers long. The ride will be fast-paced and you will overcome about 600 meters of altitude.

Cycling and mountain biking

Of course you can also discover the many waterfalls on two wheels. If you prefer to stay in the valley, a "normal" road bike is more than sufficient. However, if you want to venture off the beaten track on natural paths or bike trails, you will need a mountain bike

A popular mountain bike route leads from Lauterbrunnen via Mürren to Gimmelwald and via Stechelberg back to Lauterbrunnen. For this 26 km long, moderately difficult tour you should allow about three hours.

You can also explore the area by e-bike. With the support of the battery, your radius is much larger. So you can make a trip to Interlaken. There is also a guided e-bike tour to Lauterbrunnen from Interlaken, which is entirely dedicated to the theme of "waterfalls".

Base jumping and paragliding

Lauterbrunnen is known worldwide in the base jumping scene. Every year, around 500 base jumpers leap from the 400 to 700 meter high rock faces into the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Tragically, tragic and fatal accidents occur time and again during this slightly breakneck sport

Paragliding on the other hand is a very safe sport, which you can practice here on a tandem flight with an experienced pilot. Since base jumping and paragliding partly take place at the same places, it is time-regulated.

Skydiving

During an adrenaline-pumping skydive, you first fly along imposing waterfalls in high and steep rock faces. Then you parachute in tandem from 4000 meters and land in Lauterbrunnen.

In Lauterbrunnen you can practice these winter sports:

  • Skiing
  • snowboarding
  • snowshoeing
  • tobogganing
  • cross country skiing

Skiing

In winter, several large winter sports areas can be reached quickly from Lauterbrunnen. These include "Kleine Scheidegg - Männlichen", "Grindelwald - Wengen" and "Mürren - Schilthorn" Here, a total of over one hundred kilometers of slopes in all levels of difficulty await you. In Wengen you even have the opportunity to ski down the world famous Lauberhorn run. You can find a detailed description in this guide about ski resorts in the Bernese Oberland.

Sledding

The toboggan run from Sulwald via Isenfluh to Lauterbrunnen is very beautiful in this area. You will pass the icy Sulzbach waterfall. Otherwise you can expect over 100 km of prepared toboggan runs in the Jungfrau region, which you can reach easily with the mountain railroads. The closest to Lauterbrunnen are the toboggan runs on the Schilthorn.

Snowshoeing

The waterfalls are also a great spectacle in winter, even if they have less water than in summer. Instead, they are partly frozen over. In Mürren, Wengen and Isenfluh well signposted snowshoe hikes are waiting for you, lasting between 2 and 3.5 hours.

Cross-country skiing

The valley of the 72 waterfalls is also a great place for cross-country skiing. A 10 km long cross-country trail leads from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg and back. On the way you will pass the Trümmelbach Falls and the Mürrenbach Falls, among others. The valley ends in a large nature reserve, which is part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Jungfrau-Aletsch.

Events in Lauterbrunnen

Events around Lauterbrunnen often revolve around winter sports. Night skiing, freeride days or winter hikes under a full moon: there are so many interesting possibilities.

The Inferno Downhill is the biggest amateur race in skiing. It has been held on the Schilthorn in January since 1928. On the 14.9 km longest downhill race, about 2000 meters of altitude are overcome.

The starting point is just below the Schilthorn, while the finishing straight is reached in the valley near Lauterbrunnen. The particularly demanding course may also be ridden outside the official race. However, to do so you have to master an ascent at the Maulerhubel lift.
