The Golden Round Trip is a very popular excursion from Lucerne that combines numerous highlights of the region. You first travel by boat across beautiful Lake Lucerne, then board the world's steepest cog railroad to reach Mount Pilatus, jump on the spectacular cable car down to the valley and board the bus that takes you back to Lucerne.

But one thing at a time...

Part 1: Lucerne - Alpnachstad - Pilatus

At the harbor in Lucerne, which you will find located right next to Lucerne train station, you embark the boat that will take you across Lake Lucerne to Alpnachstad. On the way you can enjoy a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. The trip takes about 75 minutes. Once you arrive in Alpnachstad, the world's steepest cogwheel railroad is waiting for you just a few steps from the boat landing stage to take you up to Mount Pilatus, 2131 meters above sea level. After 29 min in the cogwheel train, which reaches an inclination of 48%, you arrive at the top of the mountain.

Part 2: Free time on the Pilatus

Numerous highlights await you on Mount Pilatus. So spend some time here and enjoy the great selection of options.
- On the Dragon Trail you will go on a voyage of discovery and learn stories about the myth of Mount Pilatus.
- From the mountain station you can reach three viewing platforms of the peaks "Esel", "Oberhaupt" and "Tomlinshorn" on short hikes. You can walk around the Oberhaupt peak in 20 minutes, climb the Esel in 15 minutes and the Tomlishorn in about 40 minutes.
- In the restaurants Pilatus-Kulm and Bellevue you can treat yourself to a delicious meal and enjoy the view.
- In Dragon World a tour through the dragon saga awaits you. Games of skill and special effects fascinate both children and adults.
Part 3: Pilatus - Kriens - Lucerne

The cable car "Dragon Ride" takes you to the intermediate station Fräkmüntegg, where you change to the panorama gondola. This will take you back down to Kriens. On the way you have the possibility to enjoy the view for about 30 minutes and to look at the landscape through the big panorama windows. The bus station "Kriens, Zentrum Pilatus" is located only 5 minutes on foot next to the valley station of the Pilatus cable car. Here you get on the bus of line 1 and travel for 12 min back to Lucerne, where your trip ends.

- If you prefer, you can also start the Golden Round Trip in Alpnachstad or in Kriens. The classic route starts in Lucerne, but you are flexible in your planning.
- For wheelchairs, advance booking (at least 1 day in advance) is required
- Strollers can only be transported folded up
- It is best to download the SBB App on your cell phone so that you can check the timetable during the day. This way you can spontaneously adjust your plans if you want to stay longer on Mount Pilatus or interrupt your trip along the way.
