Ilanz is located directly on the Vorderrhein in the wide hollow Gruob in the Surselva region. The Ruinaulta Rhine Gorge is only a few kilometers away. It is 13 km long and about 400 m wide and extends from Ilanz to Reichenau, where the Hinterrhein flows in. The valley Lugnez (Val Lumnezia) extends from Ilanz to the southwest for about 25 km.The river Glenner flows through the valley and joins the Vorderrhein at Ilanz. Worth seeing in Ilanz are the remains of the 16th century town fortifications with the Upper Gate and the Red Gate, as well as an old fortified tower. The stained-glass window cycle in the Doninican convent in Ilanz was created by the artist Max Ruedi. The area around Ilanz is popular because of its untouched nature. It is characterized by a particularly varied alpine landscape.
