Frequently Asked Questions about Climbing in Switzerland
What equipment do I need for climbing?
The basic equipment includes:
climbing helmet
harness
webbing sling
climbing shoes
climbing gloves
HMS carabiner
belay device
What are the levels of difficulty for climbing according to the SAC scale?
The difficulty levels for climbing start at T3. T1 concerns hiking, T2 demanding mountain hiking.
T3 (mountain tour): Here most of the tour is considerably steep. The mountain paths are often not developed and some segments contain climbing aids with wire ropes, chains and footholds. Sturdy mountain boots are an absolute must here.
T4 (Difficult Mountain Tour): Mountaineering over high alpine terrain is classified as T4. Technical installations in the form of wire ropes, stirrups or chains as technical installations are no longer present here.
T5 (Very difficult mountaineering): Tours over very steep rock, vertical sections are also already present. There are no markings, the climber must find the right way himself and be able to estimate. This also applies to climbing over obscure rock and steep grass terrain
T6 (Extremely difficult mountain tour): In this category there are almost pure climbing tours, hardly any mountain tours. Continuous steep rock passages are very typical. A rope belay is very strongly recommended in this category. Many years of experience in alpine climbing is a prerequisite for this category with the highest demands. In addition to mountain boots with stiff soles, a rockfall helmet and basic equipment for rope belaying are part of the equipment.
What are the requirements to be able to climb?
A good physical condition and absolute freedom from vertigo are very important prerequisites. In addition, you should never go climbing alone, but at least with another climber who can secure you. You will get a good training in guided climbing tours. Never disregard the learned rules due to time constraints
