What is the difference between a llama and an alpaca?

You can see the first difference immediately when you look at the animals side by side. An alpaca is much smaller than a llama. Its wool is also finer and smoother. This is why alpacas are often bred for wool.

What is a llama or alpaca trekking?

Under a trekking you can imagine shorter or longer walks with the animals. Each participant leads one animal on a leash. Trekking is not strenuous because your luggage is basically carried by the llamas. It is suitable for children and adults alike. Very young children are not yet allowed to lead an animal alone. An adult must be present. Before you start trekking with your animal, you will have enough time to get acquainted with it.

Some providers also offer trekking tours of several days. You will spend the night in simple, romantic mass accommodations.

Whether walking or challenging trekking, possibly combined with a boat tour, geocaching or even a cable car ride, some tour providers make almost all customer wishes possible. Occasionally, treks for wheelchair users are also offered

In any case, you should remember to bring weatherproof clothing and comfortable hiking shoes. In most cases, you should also bring your own food. Heavy backpacks are usually carried by the llamas (up to 20 kg per animal) or, for tours lasting several days, by accompanying cars. Llamas are pack animals. However, you are not allowed to ride them, not even children.

In our ultimate guide for llama and alpaca trekking you will also find a route near you. At the bottom of this page, we have answered questions about clothing, animal husbandry and Swiss laws in the FAQ. There you can also find out whether the animals can be dangerous.

Llama and Alpaca Trekking in Zurich

Five llama and alpaca trekking providers are located in the Zurich Region.

  • Llama walk and taster encounter
  • Combination trekking with geocaching
  • Combination with animal observation with experts (beavers, birds, etc.)
  • In combination with a rafting tour on the Rhine or the Thur river

Description

Petra and Martin Heussi offer llama trekking and walks on their farm in Marthalen. Walks serve to switch off from everyday life and do not require any special fitness. They last a maximum of 90 minutes.

A taster encounter is 60 minutes long and brings a first contact with the animals. It is especially ideal for smaller children, especially since the two white llamas of the total of five come from Circus Nock. They are used to the audience and noise.

The trekking is carried out at different levels of difficulty and varies in length and terrain depending on the fitness and wishes of the participants. The starting point is Marthalen.

The farm is located outside the village in the direction of Rheinau. You can reach it by car from the center of the village via Lochstrasse and Radstrasse. For an individual trekking you can book combinations with geocaching, rafting tours on the Rhine or Thur or also with a swimming or food break. You should bring sturdy shoes and clothing suitable for the weather.

Included

Pick up from Marthalen train station

Extras

Lunch or dinner as a menu can be booked in addition to a half-day trekking (four hours) for a minimum of three participants. It will be served after completion of the trekking.

Alpakable

Alpakable is a small farm with four alpacas in Mönchaltdorf (Canton Zurich). You can make friends with alpacas here, teach them small exercises and take walks around the farm.

Highlights

  • Walks with a small course
  • Visiting afternoons for groups
  • Workshops
  • Spinning course

Description

Monika Büchel and her family run the Alpakable Farm as a non-profit association. It is located in Mönchaltdorf in the district of Uster and can be reached from Zurich via Forchstrasse and the A52 in about half an hour. Walks with an easy course start with a question and answer session about the farm and the alpacas. Afterwards you can feed the alpacas and make friends with them under supervision. Small exercises will prepare you for the course, which will be run before the walk around the farm.

Visiting afternoons for groups start very similarly. Instead of the course and the walk, you will feel and handle the wool of the alpacas. Along the way there will be a picnic, for which you will bring your own food. In the workshops you will also get acquainted with the alpacas before learning about their wool and how to process it. Similarly, the spinning course will teach you how to spin with your hands, spindle and spinning wheel, and you will also make a fleece from alpaca wool.

Included

Included are the use of the equipment and the wool you need for visiting afternoons, workshops or spinning classes.

Extras

There is an additional cost for materials for visiting afternoons for groups. Annual club memberships include arranged alpaca visits plus workshop use to make a desired product with alpaca wool.
